Neeraj Ghaywan on the response to Homebound at Cannes, "Some people came up to me, hugged me and broke down"

Neeraj Ghaywan is back with a feature film in the form of Homebound, 10 years after his remarkable debut with Masaan. The film is a moving drama starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor. The film was recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it received an overwhelming response. Neeraj spoke about the film and its making in an interview with us. Ten years since your brilliant directorial debut in Masaan. What took you so long to return with a feature film? I've been trying to answer this question for a long time, but I’ve never quite found a fully formed response, perhaps because I was still grappling with impostor syndrome after Masaan. After the film, I received many scripts and interest from studios, but I often stood in my own way. I was searching for something where my identity and my work could merge—something that truly challenges me and resonates deeply with my values and my search for meaning in an increasingly disoriented world. I still don’t h...

Bipasha Basu recalls how everyone warned her against doing Jism; says, “My manager thought I had gone crazy”

Bipasha Basu is revisiting one of the boldest and most defining roles of her career — her 2003 film Jism. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the actress shared how her decision to take up the film was met with strong opposition from everyone around her, including her own manager. “Jism was the time when I was at the peak, and everyone told me you cannot do adult content film. You are like the typical Hindi heroine who is established in people's hearts now. And I said, I just like the story so much. I said I'll go ahead and do it. Everybody stopped me from doing it. My manager thought I had gone crazy,” Bipasha recalled. The film, which co-starred John Abraham and featured a sultry narrative, went on to become a critical and commercial success. It not only pushed the envelope in terms of content but also redefined Bipasha's image in the industry—from a conventional Bollywood heroine to a risk-taker who wasn’t afraid of breaking stereotypes. Looking back, Bipasha ...

Single-screen exhibitors and industry stakeholders SLAM multiplexes for charging producers for installing standees, playing trailers: “These multiplexes have COMPLETELY destroyed the sheer fabric of the exhibition sector”

The recent row between Bhool Chuk Maaf and PVR has brought to the fore many complaints from the producers about the national chains. One of them is that the makers are asked to pay if they want to put up posters or standees and to play trailers of their films. Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, wrote on his social media pages, “Asking for monies to be paid for trailer playing, film publicity displays at their sites, cinemas which are already in red are further going downhill. With OTT onslaught sitting on their head, they should instead comfort producers & give them ease of doing business, so that more makers are encouraged to take risks & choose the big screen release instead... the exhibition community should avoid nailing their own coffin !!” We asked Girish Johar to comment more on this aspect. He said, “The cinemas have started asking monies against showcasing film publicity, be it trailers, digital posters, video walls, etc. It is apparently one o...

Hansal Mehta on his departed friend Mukul Dev, “We bonded over booze, broken hearts, and the foolish hope that things would one day make sense”

The Indian film industry lost a fine actor in Mukul Dev. He passed away on Friday May 23 after being unwell since some time. His friend and director Hansal Mehta spoke about him in an interview with us. Hansal, you’ve just lost a very dear friend I will miss Mukul Dev deeply. His booming laughter at our inside jokes, his unmatched gift for storytelling, that unmistakable voice. He acted in two of my unreleased films and a TV show—somehow in the shadows of it all, we became very close. We bonded over booze, broken hearts, and the foolish hope that things would one day make sense. For years, we were gym buddies, pushing each other through reps and regrets. I believe Mukul was a terrific raconteur Mukul was devastatingly handsome. His presence could light up a stadium, his charm could hold a room in thrall. He had what most people only dream of: a dream launch, big directors, prominent co-stars. He had the look, the talent, the pedigree. Strangely despite his looks and talent success b...

Wamiqa Gabbi on her first attempt at comedy in Bhool Chuk Maaf, “I was a little nervous for the first two days but after that I got better”

Actress Wamiqa Gabbi has attempted comedy for the first time in Maddock Films’ Bhool Chuk Maaf, where she is cast opposite Rajkummar Rao. She gets talking about the film and her journey in an interview with us. Bhool Chuk Maaf takes you into the comedic zone for the first time. Was that tough especially since your co-star Rajkummar Rao’s comic timing is insane?  Yes sir, it was very tough because Rajkummar Rao’s comic timing is very good and I was a little nervous for the first two days. But after that, I got better because he made me very comfortable. He was very kind and very supportive, him and our director Karan Sharma. And also, I got to learn a lot while shooting with Rajkummar Rao. But I think I am ready for comedy now. This is also your first full-fledged mainstream sojourn in Hindi. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan channels celestial Indian royalty in her second Cannes 2025 appearance

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made her second red carpet appearance at the Festival de Cannes 2025 with yet another look that seamlessly fused Indian heritage with global haute couture. After captivating audiences with her first ensemble earlier this week, the L'Oréal Paris ambassador returned to the spotlight wearing a statement creation by designer Gaurav Gupta — and true to form, she brought with her a message rooted in tradition and meaning. Her black sculptural gown, titled the ‘Heiress of Clam,’ featured a dramatic, draped silhouette reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour. Embellished with a cosmic burst of metallic hues and glass crystals, the gown exuded both mysticism and elegance. But it was her cape that truly stole the show — a regal Banarasi brocade handwoven in Varanasi and inscribed with a Sanskrit shloka from the Bhagavad Gita: "Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana", a verse that encourages selfless action without attachment to outcomes. This added a philos...

Ram Gopal Varma shares lewd caption on Kiara Advani’s War 2 bikini look in now-deleted post

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma faced widespread criticism late Tuesday night after he shared actress Kiara Advani’s viral bikini stills from the teaser of War 2 with inappropriate captions. The posts, which sparked outrage on social media, were quietly deleted by Varma in the early hours of Wednesday. The controversy erupted soon after the makers of War 2 released the much-anticipated teaser of the action-packed sequel on the occasion of Jr NTR’s birthday. While the spotlight remained on the intense showdown between Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, Kiara’s brief appearance in a bikini sequence unexpectedly stole attention online. Dressed in a bold swimwear ensemble, she was seen walking beside a pool—an image that quickly went viral. However, Varma’s decision to share stills from the teaser with suggestive remarks drew swift backlash. Social media users were quick to call out the filmmaker for objectifying the actress. “Ram Gopal Varma has lost it,” wrote one user. Some users also questioned th...

“Response to the War 2 teaser has been incredible”: Jr NTR pens note for fans on his 42nd birthday

On the occasion of Jr NTR’s 42nd birthday, Yash Raj Films released the much-anticipated teaser of War 2, officially marking the Telugu superstar’s Bollywood debut. The film, set within the ever-expanding YRF Spy Universe, stars Hrithik Roshan in the lead and is being helmed by Ayan Mukerji. While War (2019) was directed by Siddharth Anand, its sequel continues the story of Kabir, played by Hrithik Roshan. In War 2, Jr NTR enters the spy franchise as the antagonist, and the teaser gave audiences a brief glimpse into his character, one that appears menacing and calculated. The teaser primarily features a voiceover by Jr NTR, with quick flashes of high-stakes action sequences between him and Hrithik Roshan. Though it avoids revealing much about the plot or characters, the visual tone and intensity suggest a showdown-driven narrative. Following the teaser drop, Jr NTR took to social media to share a note of gratitude. He wrote, “Sometimes I pause and look back at this journey and every t...

Kunal Kohli calls Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning “yawn fest”, suggests Tom Cruise to “make another one”: “Can’t end like this”

While Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has opened to enthusiastic audience turnout in India, filmmaker Kunal Kohli is not impressed. Taking to social media, the Hum Tum director expressed his disappointment with what is expected to be the final chapter in Tom Cruise’s legendary franchise. “They Did the Impossible”: Kohli Criticizes MI 8’s Execution In a sharply-worded review, Kohli labelled the film a “yawn fest” and said it failed to uphold the franchise’s standard of high-octane entertainment. “They did the impossible. Messed up a #MissionImpossible film. What a yawn fest. Sad end to one of the greatest franchises ever,” Kohli wrote. He went on to add, “Will just forget they ever made this one and rewatch the rest of the great MI films. @tomcruise, now make another one. Can’t end like this.” Kohli’s remarks have sparked conversation online, especially given that The Final Reckoning is being viewed as the concluding act of the long-running Mission: Impossible saga. In cont...

Sharmila Tagore on Aranyer Din Ratri at Cannes; reveals, "Satyajit Ray did everything himself"

You’re off to Cannes for the restored screening of Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri? Yes, thank God the war situation did not escalate—I wouldn’t have gone if it had. I’m glad Aranyer Din Ratri is being shown at Cannes. The film was actually better appreciated outside India, even when it was originally released. Europe, especially, loved it. It was a big, big hit in Paris. Every time I watched it with an international audience—every time Robi Ghosh came on screen—they clapped and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Simi Garewal was cast as a tribal. Wasn't that rather unusual? It was rather unusual because the Santhals are generally shorter in stature, and Simi is quite tall. Also, very sophisticated and urban? She didn’t come across that way in the film… thanks to the makeup and styling. She worked very well in the role. Yes, she was tall—very tall—but no one really noticed. Her height wasn’t a concern in the overall portrayal. Of course, in India—especially in Kolkata—there was some c...

The film was showcased in the Cannes Classics section after a six-year-long restoration led by American filmmaker Wes Anderson. Draped in a simple yet elegant emerald-green saree, Sharmila Tagore exuded timeless charm with her minimalistic jewellery and graceful presence on the red carpet. Accompanying her was her daughter and jewellery designer Saba Pataudi, who was seen in a bright yellow floral ethnic ensemble. Saba shared several glimpses from their Cannes experience on social media and wrote a reflective caption alongside her pictures, saying, “Let the party begin....! Moments before the Red carpet .... scene. In the midst of chaos was calm. Hectic yet happy. Frenzy and fantastic. And self conscious. Mixed emotions coursing through , yet here is a chance to explo...

24 years of Ek Rishtaa: Suneel Darshan recalls, "The success and appreciation for Jaanwar strengthened my conviction in strong emotional human drama"

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan’s Ek Rishtaa: The Bond Of Love completed 24 years yesterday on May 18. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Karisma Kapoor, Mohnish Bahl, Juhi Chawla and Rakhee Gulzar, the film was an emotional family drama. Suneel Darshan looks back at the film in an interview with us. What made you make such an ambitious family drama with Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee Gulzar, Akshay Kumar and others? The success and phenomenal appreciation of viewers for Jaanwar strengthened my conviction in the genre of strong emotional human drama. And with Akshay Kumar being keen to collaborate with me for a long cinematic journey ahead, I narrated him the story of Ek Rishtaa which would be our next venture together. And Mr Bachchan? The casting of Amitabh Bachchan was beyond my dreams and I’m truly thankful to him for his participation. It was my third venture with Karisma Kapoor as the leading lady and such a pleasure to have Juhi Chawla & Raakhee ki come on board. A special mentio...

Twinkle Khanna REACTS to memes about Akshay Kumar competing with Vicky Kaushal over Operation Sindoor film rights; calls out war hysteria and fake news

In her latest Times of India column, writer and former actor Twinkle Khanna has taken a humorous yet pointed dig at the ongoing flood of fake news and online frenzy surrounding the near-war situation between India and Pakistan. Among the many witty observations in her piece, one particular comment stood out — a fictional argument with her husband Akshay Kumar. “I just read that you are fighting with Vicky Kaushal over who gets to make a movie on Operation Sindoor,” Khanna wrote, recalling a phone conversation with “the man of the house.” His reply: “‘It’s fake news and my leg is on fire, so I will call you later.’” She quipped, “He really should devise better excuses if he just wants to hang up.” Her satirical tone reflects her concern over the growing blur between truth and misinformation online. From rumours about Islamabad being captured to unverified claims of nuclear attacks and malware threats, Khanna highlighted how fake news has spread faster than facts. “Even Jesus had to w...

Tanushree Dutta remembers her breakout role in Raqeeb; reveals, “We shot 18 hours a day”

Raqeeb is so busy trying to shock us with its high-voltage wantonness, it forgets to pause and refuel its creative motors. The narrative moves at breakneck speed, creating a highly charged, sexually defiant version of Abbas-Mustan’s Humraaz—about the benevolent husband, the adulterous wife, and her amoral lover. Jimmy Shergill sports theatrical rhetoric and flowing henna-coloured hair that doesn’t really suit him. There are three heroes, one heroine, two item songs, three romantic songs, three attempted murders, and a couple of funerals. There’s also a rather vulgar item song by starlet Sherlyn Chopra. The film’s only main female lead, Tanushree Dutta, tries to impress the naïve millionaire (played by Rahul Khanna) by claiming to enjoy Shakespeare. Sure, we believe you. As much as we believe the fast-paced film’s perverse quadrangle, featuring three besotted men and one woman. Tanushree does show potential—if only she would stop choosing such inconsistent roles. Director Anurag Sing...

24 Years of Ek Rishtaa: Amitabh Bachchan Reflects on friendship, filmmaking, and Raakhee; says, “We were a family on and off screen”

Suneel Darshan was completely bowled over by your professionalism and expertise during the shooting of Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love. The feeling is mutual. I think Suneel is extremely focused and organized. Long before Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love went on the floors, he knew exactly what he wanted to do on screen—down to the music and the songs. That, I think, is the forte of this millennial generation. Filmmakers in the past were also organized in their own way, but they carried it all in their heads. Today's directors put it down on paper, and there’s a whole battery of assistants to take care of the nitty-gritty. That explains why Ek Rishtaa was completed in such an amazingly short time. Suneel is one director who wouldn’t let you off the hook until he’s completely satisfied with your performance. What was it like working with Raakheedi in Ek Rishtaa after so many years? Well, you know we’ve done 13 films together. The last ones before Ek Rishtaa were Bemisal and Shakti—both wo...

EXCLUSIVE: Did you know that Tiku Talsania, known for his comic roles, played a VILLAIN in his debut film? Veteran actor BREAKS silence; also expresses desire to portray iconic roles like Don Corleone from The Godfather

Tiku Talsania is one of the most respected actors in the film industry and surprisingly, one can only recall him playing positive and comic roles. Has Tiku Talsania ever played a villain? Bollywood Hungama discussed this aspect during an exclusive interaction with the actor last month, during the promotions of the re-release of Andaz Apna Apna (1994). When asked if he had ever essayed a negative role, Tiku Talsania revealed, “My very first film was called Duty (1986). I played the villain in that film! The film didn’t run much. I even asked director Ravikant Nagaich why he offered me the villainous role. He replied, ‘That’s because in the original South version, the villain looks exactly like me’!” Duty also starred Govinda, Anuradha Patel and Rakesh Bedi. Tiku Talsania then confessed, “I am waiting for that opportunity where a director comes up and tells me, ‘I’ll make you a villain’. I’d like to play a role like that of Don Corleone in The Godfather. I’d love to play a role like Th...

Ananya Panday on toxic beauty norms: “People said i had chicken legs, no ‘t**s’, no a** - you can never win”

Ananya Panday is no stranger to scrutiny, but the actress is now speaking out with honesty and introspection about the toll of unrealistic beauty standards and how they impact young women — including herself. In a heartfelt conversation with popular YouTuber Lilly Singh, Ananya recalled the early days of her career when she was just 18 or 19 and how the criticism she faced was deeply personal. “I was really skinny, you know, and everyone used to kind of make fun about that. They were like, oh, you have chicken legs, and you look like a matchstick, and you don’t have t**s, and you don’t have an a**,” she said. “So that was what it was first.” Even as her body changed and she grew in the public eye, the commentary didn’t stop. “They were like, oh, there’s no way she’s got her b*** done, or she’s got this done. So you can never win. People will constantly have something to say and criticize that,” she added, noting how such commentary disproportionately targets women. “That’s something ...

It was the first time we had landed in the city, and we didn’t know anyone. All we knew was that we could write a script. So, we wrote 99, Shor in the City, and Go Goa Gone, I think. As engineers aspiring to be filmmakers, we thought that if we wrote three scripts, at least one of them might get made. More scripts meant better odds. 99 was our first one. But again, we didn’t know anyone. How did you convince a producer to back 99? Just making contacts, approaching any actor or producer—it was all taking forever. And we had zero clue how to go about it. Plus, we looked like we were from another world. We didn’t look like we belonged in Mumbai. People didn’t know who we were. But they did say the script was fun, fresh, and something they hadn’t read before. So, 99 had no reference point? Right. That kind of proved to be tough and good at the same time b...
