Top 10 Indian films of 2023: Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan is the BIGGEST hit of the year; Top 4 grossers are from Bollywood

The film industry across India was affected in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, which resulted in the closure of cinema halls. In 2022, cinema halls resumed operations in full swing. While the South industries limped back to normalcy quickly and delivered monstrous blockbusters, the Hindi cinema suffered. Several biggies bombed big time. At the same time, a narrative was spread by vested interests that Bollywood has been boycotted by the majority of the moviegoers. All these trolls had to eat their words as the Hindi film industry had its best-ever year in 2023. For the first time, Hindi films crossed the Rs. 5000 crores mark and new benchmarks were set.

In this special feature, we shall look at the top 10 Indian films of 2023 across languages at the India box office. As expected, Shah Rukh Khan’s big-scale action drama, Jawan, was the biggest hit of the year. Its domestic gross collections were a huge Rs. 761.98 crores. It was also a rare Hindi film to have made a mark in dubbed South versions as well. This was followed by Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. Despite the controversial theme, ‘A’ rating and long run time, it created a frenzy among the section of the audience. Just like Jawan, its dubbed version was well received. It ended up having collections of Rs. 662.27 crores. Pathaan, also starring SRK, collected Rs. 654.28 crores while Gadar 2, starring Sunny Deol, grossed Rs. 625.54 crores in the domestic market.

In short, the top 4 grossers of 2023 were Hindi language flicks. On number 5 was the Telugu action entertainer, the Prabhas-starrer Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire. It collected Rs. 515 crores in all languages. This was followed by the Tamil mass entertainers – Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo and Rajinikanth’s Jailer. The last three slots were also occupied by Hindi films – Tiger 3, Adipurush and The Kerala Story.
