EXCLUSIVE: Anubhav Sinha EXPOSES the toxic entourage culture: “Veteran stars feel bad, especially if their team and vanity van are smaller than that of rising stars”

Anubhav Sinha’s debut web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack got into controversies but at the same time, it also had its share of extremely positive reception from a large section of the audience. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to the acclaimed filmmaker a day after the release of the show, and he made interesting remarks when asked about the entourage debate that has become a talking point. Many filmmakers have openly said that rising entourage costs of actors needlessly add to the film’s cost. Even certain actors have agreed to this notion.

Anubhav Sinha said, “The entourage has become ridiculous; no discussion on that. The bad news about it is that it is infectious.”

He proved his point by saying, “Let’s say that there’s an actor who became a star three years back and he’s coming with five people. And then there’s an extremely credible actor for 25 years but he’s not coming with an entourage. Now this veteran star would feel bad about it, especially if his team and even his vanity van are smaller. As a result, the veteran star would try to match with the younger actor on these fronts.”

Anubhav Sinha continued, “The money that you spend on making a film, the larger percentage should go on things that show up on screen and not on the paraphernalia of making it. Hence, there’s no discussion on the fact that we need to drastically cut down on the star entourages. Also, the entourage is represented by the agencies that also manage the actor. And the agencies also have a share in the entourage cost. In short, it’s a nexus.”

Currently streaming on Netflix, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, as the name suggests, is inspired by the real-life 1999 hijacking of an Indian aeroplane. It stars Vijay Varma, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Arvind Swami, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Aditya Srivastava, Kanwaljeet Singh, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Dia Mirza, Amrita Puri, Patralekhaa and many others.
