Anupam Kher takes nostalgic trip to Mumbai’s iconic locations: Casa Maria, Prithvi Theatre and more!
Veteran actor Anupam Kher marked an impressive milestone in his career this year, completing 40 years in the film industry. To celebrate this achievement, Kher reflected on his early days in Mumbai and shared memories of six places that played an instrumental role in shaping his journey to success, during the promotions of his latest film, Vijay 69.
Kher, who made his debut with the critically acclaimed Saaransh in 1984, reminisced about his humble beginnings as a struggling actor in Mumbai. "When I first came to Mumbai, I was just trying to make ends meet. I never imagined I would reach this point in my career," he said. Over the years, Kher's determination and dedication have made him one of the most respected and versatile actors in the Indian film industry. Casa Maria, Bandra: A Special Place for Anupam Kher One of the most cherished spots for Anupam Kher is Casa Maria, a residence on St. Paul's Road in Bandra, which became his home during the making of Saaransh. "This was my third house in the city, and I stayed on the first floor when I was shooting for my debut film," he shared.
Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, Bandra: His First Job Anupam’s career in Mumbai began with a rather unconventional start at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, also located in Bandra. "The first place I worked at was when I came to Mumbai on June 3rd, 1981, for a job in an acting school. But when I arrived, I discovered that there was no actual building or school; we were conducting acting classes on the beach!"
Prithvi Theatre, Juhu: The Beginning of His Acting Life Prithvi Theatre in Juhu holds a significant place in Kher’s journey, where he began to establish himself as an actor. "I started my life at Prithvi Theatre when I landed in Mumbai on June 3rd, 1981. It’s also where I performed in Satish Kaushik’s play, Us Par Ka Nazara, which was an adaptation of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge," he shared.
Kalumal Estate, Juhu: A Dream Come True Anupam’s first personal investment in Mumbai was a one-BHK flat in Kalumal Estate, Juhu, which he bought after establishing himself in the industry. "This was my first flat in Mumbai, B23 at Kalumal Estate. It was a big step for me," Kher recalled.
Shastri Nagar, Santacruz: A Humble Beginning Before moving to more established locations in Mumbai, Kher lived in a modest setting at Shastri Nagar, Santacruz, between 1982 and 1983. "I lived there with four people. We used to sleep on the floor, and there was no fan! I can never forget those days," he shared.
Kherwadi, Bandra East: The Early Days of Struggle In 1981, Kher resided in Kherwadi, Bandra East, with a group of aspiring actors. "I lived with four people in Kherwadi, Bandra East, in 1981, and those days were a true test of endurance," Kher reflected.
As Anupam Kher continues to look back at his formative years in Mumbai, his current film Vijay 69 is gaining considerable praise for its compelling narrative and his performance. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
