Shah Rukh Khan's iconic Baazigar dialogue finds a spot in Vir Das’ International Emmys monologue: “The guy who said that in the movie…”
Actor-comedian Vir Das made history as the first Indian to host the prestigious International Emmy Awards 2024. Days after the event, Das shared highlights from his witty and thought-provoking opening monologue, which took humorous jabs at Hollywood, America, and Elon Musk, while paying tribute to Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan.
A Historic Moment for Vir Das Vir Das returned to the International Emmys stage after winning his first Emmy last year for his Netflix special Vir Das: Landing. Reflecting on his hosting duties, Das called it a “deeply personal and exhilarating moment,” adding, “The Emmys are a celebration of diverse stories from around the world. Having won an Emmy last year, I feel a profound connection to this event.”
Das opened his monologue with a cheeky reference to immigration: “It is very good to be here completely legally. I’m not a citizen. It’s a very quick visit, in and out. I was just here to vote.” Hollywood and Its Stereotypes Das humorously addressed Hollywood’s tendency to typecast Indian actors: “Any Indian character in Hollywood is named ‘Raj.’ I’ve been offered Dr Raj, Lawyer Raj, Banker Raj, and Engineer Raj. I once even got a guy from England literally named British Raj. I didn’t take the part. I want to keep my diamonds.”
He also commented on Hollywood’s penchant for remaking international stories: “We tell the original diverse international stories that Hollywood remakes into cash cows with Kevin Hart and Liam Neeson.” Sarcasm for America and Elon Musk Das’s monologue included sharp commentary on America and tech mogul Elon Musk. On Musk: “Elon Musk is a legend. Technically, it’s self-driving, but ultimately, I have control.” He also joked: “Keep Elon Musk happy. He’ll buy your platform and turn it into a podcast.” On American politics, Das quipped: “Please do not say anything divisive, offensive, or inflammatory. This is America, and you’ll be elected. Sorry. Ejected.” Shah Rukh Khan's Iconic Dialogue Vir Das referenced Shah Rukh Khan’s famous line from Baazigar: “‘Haar ke jeetne wale ko Baazigar kehte hain.’ It means learning to conquer loss is the greatest victory of all.” Das humorously added: “The guy who said that in the movie brutally murdered four people. That may be you at the afterparty. Just murder within your category.”
